What is laser hair removal?
Laser treatment works by effectively removing unwanted hair from your body using a long pulse laser to prevent the hair follicles from producing more hair.
How many laser hair treatments will I need?
Most people need between six and eight laser hair removal treatments over a period of eight to 12 weeks. It’s necessary to have more than one session, even if your hair is fine, because hair grows in cycles. The amount of treatments required will depend on where on your body you choose to have laser hair removal.
Within three weeks of a laser hair removal treatment the treated hair should start to shed. You will then have a smooth, hair-free period for a few weeks until the next cycle of hair starts to grow.
Prior to your treatment, your therapist will discuss your requirements with you and let you know how many treatments you will need in order to achieve your desired results.
How long has laser hair removal been used for?
Laser hair removal was first used cosmetically in 1997.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal treatments work by damaging hair follicles to stop future hair growth. When the laser light is exposed to the hair and skin, the light is absorbed by the pigment in your hair. Because the laser light targets pigment, laser hair removal works best on darker hair as opposed to fair hair which can’t absorb as much heat.
Who can have laser hair removal and where on my body can I have it?
Anyone can have laser hair removal; however, the laser works best on pale skin with dark, coarse hair. The most common areas to be treated are the legs, underarms, bikini line, arms, abdomen, lips, chin, face, neck, buttocks, thighs, toes and chest.
Is hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal treatment can remove the majority of hair in the treated area/s; however, contrary to what some laser clinics may say, laser treatment does not guarantee that all the hairs will permanently be removed. Very fine hairs that are the same colour as your skin may well remain after the treatment. If you choose to have a series of treatments, there’s a good chance that you will be able to remove hairs by 100%.
If you do have lots of fine hair, electrolysis is also another highly effective hair removal treatment which works by removing one hair at a time. Electrolysis can be particularly effective for removing fine hairs around your lips and eyebrows.
Is it possible to reduce hair density?
Yes. If you don’t want to remove all the hair in a particular area, it is possible to reduce the hair density. You can achieve this by having three to four laser hair removal treatments as opposed to the standard six to eight. For the best results, you should space your sessions out leaving approximately 12 weeks between treatments. This way your laser therapist will be able to effectively assess how much hair needs to be removed.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
You will experience pain similar to an elastic band snapping on your skin; however, it is not as painful as waxing. Pain will also only be felt when the laser is exposed to the skin and most people do not need anaesthetic; however, for more sensitive patients, anaesthetic is an option.
If for some reason, you don’t feel any pain during the treatment, this could be because the laser is set too low for the results to be permanent.
Are there any laser hair removal treatment side effects?
After you have had laser hair removal treatment, you may experience some of the following temporary side effects: swelling around the hair follicle, itching, redness and feelings of numbness. Please consult your doctor if any of these side effects last any longer than three days.
The following side effects are extremely rare and will only occur when the laser has been used incorrectly: bruising, purpura, hyperpigmentation and crusting/ scab formation.

What causes excessive hair growth?
If you do have excessive or abnormal hair growth, although laser treatment will help to reduce the amount of hair or get rid of it completely, it is important to consult a doctor before your treatment to rule out any medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which can cause extra hair to grow.
Is laser hair removal safe?
Absolutely. Laser hair removal was researched for over 20 years before it was used for commercial purposes in 1997. All laser hair removal practitioners at Santi are skin care experts with years of experience in laser hair removal. Prior to your treatment you will have a patch test to ensure you don’t receive any unwanted side effects.
